On the Field and the Sidelines

At the turn of the 20th century, women began being slightly more visible in the realm of sports. As the decades progressed, and particularly after World War II, women began competing more widely in sports at the both the high school and collegiate level as well as garnering support for female athletics programs in the 1970's and 80's.

Early Years

Below is an article published in The Pueblo Chieftain in 1903 highlighting women in athletics. It states "Of the many different and distinct types of womanhood, probably none is more noticeably attractive than the athletic girl." It discusses women in sports activities like tennis, golf, riding, and "pedestrianism" in Pueblo. Throughout the 20th century, women would begin to move into more officially sanctioned sports.

Early women's sports teams typically had strict rules related to dress and conduct. Most high schools and colleges did not have women's athletic programs until later into the 20th century, but some teams were organized in Pueblo, like this team from 1913.

As Fans and Participants

While many men participated in sports, women also found a way to enjoy sports and bond together. Many times the wives of avid athletes would also play in their own leagues or games. Wife's games of baseball were especially popular during the 40's and 50's.

Family was and remains an important aspect of sports in Pueblo. Below is a photo of the Pueblo Dodgers baseball team with their families.

Women were also avid fans of sporting events, especially in Pueblo where the rivalry and support for high school sports programs runs high.
