CF&I Softball

This is an example of how teams were organized for CF&I’s leagues. Departments played against each other, and then the winners of the league went on to play in larger state tournaments. Competitive sports leagues became very popular because there were not as many forms of entertainment as we have today.

This excerpt from May 9, 1930 Steel Works Blast describes the set up for a season of competitive softball. Sports such as softball, volleyball, swimming, and gymnastics provided opportunities for women in the sports world, even though women took a backseat to men's sports. There was not much written about women's sports, so the records for women are lacking.

Sports were very competitive. July 3, 1930’s Steel Works Blast talks about how a collection of most valuable players was collected in order to compete as an all-star team against other teams in the state. Many CF&I teams (not necessarily softball) were very good and went on to compete in national tournaments against teams from all over the United States.

Although there was only men’s baseball, there was both men’s and women’s softball. This article from the August 23, 1940 Steel Works Blast refers to women as the “weaker sex,” however, these were some of the earlier days of women in sports. Softball has now become a predominately women's sport.

This was a women’s YMCA softball team in the 1940s. Softball is very similar to baseball, but women often played softball as opposed to baseball. These uniforms seem very constricting, but sports have evolved so much over the past century that the game probably looked a lot different than how it looks today.
