Pride & Prejudice and the Contemporary Era:

Translating 19th Century Literature into Tweets and Vlogs

The Literature

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! -- When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
- Caroline Bingley, Pride & Prejudice chapter 10

Though Miss Bingley doesn't actually mean what she says to Darcy, there really is no enjoyment like reading or multitudes of books. Pride & Prejudice has inspired countless novels, from murder mysteries to popular modern adaptations like Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding. While many authors, like James, have kept their focus on the regency period - anywhere from prequels to long after the story - to create appropriations rather than adaptations, the most famous true adaptations have taken the bones of Pride & Prejudice and created a new take on the classic Elizabeth/Darcy romance.

My favorite adaptation I've read (and one of my favorite books) is Austenland by Shannon Hale, which I knew I would like as soon as I read the dedication.

Ironically, even as the Elizabeth Bennet figure, protagonist Jane herself is a victim of the famous Colin Firth Pride & Prejudice adaptation. However not all of the adaptation heroines are so self-aware.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a thirty-something woman in possession of a satisfying career and fabulous hairdo must be in want of very little.”
― Shannon Hale, Austenland

Bridget Jones's Diary focuses on the love triangle of Lizzie, Darcy, and George Wickham, renamed Bridget Jones, Mark Darcy, and Daniel Cleaver respectively. Mark Darcy is played by Colin Firth, a nod to the BBC miniseries.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that when one part of your life starts going okay, another falls spectacularly to pieces.”
― Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones's Diary

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is simply a revised version of the original book, so its bones are much more similar than the others.

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.”
― Seth Grahame-Smith, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet is the novel version of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries released after the vlog series ended. As I mentioned earlier, we lose some of Lizzie's thoughts in the vlog that we would normally get through free indirect discourse since she picks and chooses what content to show. Through Secret Diary, we have Lizzie's journal to supplement the vlogs and provide any additional or missing content. The audiobook is read by the delightful Ashley Clements, who plays Lizzie Bennet on The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

“'It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.' My mom gave me that quote on a t-shirt.”
― Bernie Su and Kate Rorick, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet
