Tartars

Beginning in the thirteenth century, Mongols were often referred to as "Tartars." On the one hand, the name reflects the fact that some Mongol tribes referred to themselves as Tatars. On the other hand, it suggests the name of Tartarus, one of the medieval European words for "hell."
