Below is the popular medieval, T+O map of the world popularized in copies of Isidore's Etymologies. These maps were oriented with East pointing upwards and consisted of three land masses, each the inheritance of each of Noah's three sons (Shem, Ham, and Japheth). The lands were separated by water (usually understood as the Great Sea and the Mediterranean Sea).
