Fall of Edessa

The Crusader county of Edessa, established in 1099, was the first of the feudal states obtained by crusaders during the first Crusade. In 1144, it became the first Crusader state to fall when Imad ad-din Zengi of Mosul overtook the territory in the Siege of Edessa.

The moment was catastrophic enough to the crusading psyche to catalyze the preaching of the Second Crusade.
