Emperor Frederick Barbarossa (1122-1190) served as Holy Roman Emperor from 1155 until his death in 1190. Hamilton maintains that the Letter of Prester John was meant to attenuate the authority of Pope Alexander III by providing a model of a powerful king with ecclesiastical authority.
