The International Prester John Project: How A Global Legend Was Created Across Six Centuries

Archibald Bower

Archibald Bower (1686-1766) was a Scottish historian who, after first becoming a Jesuit in Rome, converted to the Church of England and subsequently wrote a seven-volume History of the Popes (1748-1766). Given the number of popes who directly involved themselves with the legend of Prester John, it is unsurprising that Bower comments on the legend in his text.
