A Study of Secrecy

I believe it is the opportunity to be anonymous online that is the overreaching topic that needed to be studied.  Social media and usernames are beginning to shape the way that people identify with themselves and share with one another.  I was curious to understand how sites like PostSecret are fostering anonymity and how such anonymity influences self-disclosure. Self-disclosure is the process of one person sharing personal information with another.  I wanted to understand what motivates people to share anonymously and what is it that they are saying.  Through completing a comprehensive contextual analysis I have examined how the words and images of the secrets are representative of one another and what type of meaning they provide.  After looking at the secrets I examined the message boards to find out what secrets have been most inspiring and why.  Through researching the secrets of the website and the community that has emerged from sharing them, I have drawn conclusions about anonymity's role. Anonymity online is becoming easily accessible and it is imperative that we study its power.
