"Poetry for the People": Reading Garveyism through Poetry

rainbow

In Genesis 9:16, the rainbow is said to represent the covenant between God and Noah, or the promise that God will never again send 40-day rains to drown out the earth. But "rainbow" also recalls Skinner's poem "Give Me the Rainbow." This may well have been a reference to that poem, since the Poetry for the People section created its own kind of community; regardless of author's intention, we might understand these poems "in conversation" with each other.
