Our Rare Books, Our SMC: An Exhibit of Items Held at Saint Mary's College

Children's Literature

While the matter of raising children has been a primary concern of humanity throughout history, children’s culture now is vastly different from children’s culture two hundred years ago. The Rare Book Room’s collection offers insight into the constants and changes in children’s culture, particularly through pieces of children’s literature. The works explored here were published throughout the 19th century and include nursery rhymes and children’s games filled with illustrations along with an educational work. These works allow for a comparison between children’s literature from the 19th and 21st century, revealing both striking similarities and extreme differences. While there is a large time difference between when these books were published and today, many of the main principles and goals of the books remain the same. The stories may be different, but the goal of entertaining and educating children has stayed constant.
