Our Bodies, Ourselves and Seventies Body Culture

Our Bodies, Ourselves (1971) as a Milestone for Women

Our Bodies, Ourselves (1971) was the first publication to give women a space for their own personal narratives about health, sex, childbearing, lesbian culture, marriage, single life, self-care, and many other topics centered around female experience. Now in its ninth edition, the book treats these topics in simple, lay language and from a frank, supportive perspective. The book celebrates women's voices and life stories, and it offers women a way to reclaim their bodies from the medical establishment and from the pressures of objectification: "To be able to see and feel the strength, beauty and potential in women was exhilarating. We began to feel prouder and prouder of ourselves" (19) . . . We've all become more patient, accepting, and realistic. We've learned to respect our individual needs for space and our different natural paces. We understand that we need to nourish both our relationships with one another and ourselves as individuals" (69). And, with encouraging tips about taking advantage of the many ways to be involved in sports and other physical activities, the myth of women's physical inferiority to men was soundly debunked.
