Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

C. Claiborne established St. Mary Parish on April 17, 1811. The residents of St. Mary Parish initially used private residences as a courthouse. By 1820, the Louisiana State Legislature designated Franklin as the parish seat, and citizens constructed a wooden court building. It was later replaced in 1850 by a Greek Revival-style building. However, by 1906, the courthouse had deteriorated and was no longer safe, prompting its replacement with a Romanesque courthouse in 1908. Finally, in 1970, citizens replaced the courthouse with a modern, practical structure built to withstand 150 m.ph. hurricane winds. It is located at 501 Main Street.
During the construction period of the courthouse from 1967-1970, Ory Miguez took numerous photographs.
