Earlier in the text, Bradley renounces the ornate lifestyle of her fellow Englishwomen, arguing that their fixation with possessions keeps them from the grace of God. Despite her captors' religious devotion and consistency, on the other hand, their minimalist lifestyle communicates little more than a lack of civilization and class. Bradley takes the time neither to accept nor respect a culture with which she is unfamiliar, and instead rationalizes her imposition of Puritanism as a necessary missionary effort.
