Opening Up Space: A Lovely Technofeminist Opportunity

Complicating the Patriarchy

Bradley here condemns the mistreatment and consideration of women as inferiors. There ideally should be a cross-cultural equality of and respect between genders--a prospect that she effectively communicates. However, it could be argued that gender equality in Western society was limited in its application. Women were largely expected to act as docile caretakers with limited rights and influence. Although Bradley effectively criticizes the mistreatment of women outside her culture, throughout the novel she implicitly accepts and places herself comfortably into her expected role as a Puritan woman in the early 19th century.
