'One That's More Torrid': The Pirates of Madagascar

Theseus and Ariadne

The Greek legendary hero Theseus killed the beastly Minotaur (which demanded human sacrifice of the Athenians on behalf of its vengeful master). Theseus was able to escape the twisting labyrinth only because the princess Ariadne gave him both a powerful weapon and a ball of string to leave himself a trail; the string is likely the "clue" referenced here.

The Google Art website allows for a detailed look at this mosaic interpretation, including the gift of the string at left. https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/asset/theseus-mosaic/sAHPzcCsLQEyDg?ms=%7B%22x%22%3A0.2615371459891991%2C%22y%22%3A0.6247859936089698%2C%22z%22%3A10.751097686037848%2C%22size%22%3A%7B%22width%22%3A0.9071663684036883%2C%22height%22%3A0.4371858182009602%7D%7D
