Marcus Rediker notes that the quartermaster was elected by the crew, as was typical of all officers aboard pirate ships of the era, in direct counterpoint to the aristocracy-based merchant and naval ships. His powers "counterbalanced those of the captain," and he was to ensure fair "distribution of 'the necessaries of life'" (Villains of All Nations 66).
