'One That's More Torrid': The Pirates of Madagascar

[Tew iv] Tew's Ending

As discussed in the introductory section to the General History, the real Thomas Tew did visit the island twice. According to court depositions of some of the pirates who returned to England and the American colonies, he encountered the real priate Adam Baldridge, and left after a brief but successful visit. Originally from Rhode Island, he was then courted by the governor of New York to turn from pirate to privateer (a practice that thrived in the American colonies and Caribbean for several decades after the English had abandoned it, instead attempting to dominate via more stable shipping lanes). It was on his return that he then met a fate much like the one described in the General History, shot in the bowels while attempting to raid the Mogul's fleet.
