A "cocoa walk" was a plantation where cocoa was cultivated, generally for export to Europeans willing to pay a high price for the delicacy since Columbus and Cortez brought back samples from their voyages. It is not clear when cocoa made its way to Madagascar, but plantations were certainly being established in western Africa by the late seventeenth century.
