Misson [part iv] Yoak of Slavery

The relationship between pirates and African slaves in this time period is complex. European pirates have often celebrated for allegedly freeing slaves and inviting them to join the ship's crew; however, it is worth noting that for all of Misson's enlightened talk of the captured Africans and their "equal Reason," he also argues they be "sensible of the Obligation" they owe their liberators, which was not stipulated when freeing the French prisoners in the previous section. Equally complex is Misson's assertion here that he as a sailor had "exempted his Neck from the galling Yoak of Slavery," when of course he would have held rights and privileges not afforded to English
