Misson Part iv Bring a Mast by the Board

Here, Misson is concerned they are about have a mast toppled and lost overboard. Contemporary authors cite a mast, or the main-mast, being "brought by the board" as a rationale for a ship being disabled. Several of the pirates in Alexander O. Exquemelin's famous "Buccaneers of America" find themselves in this position, for example, using the same terminology.

In addition to causing the ship to lose some or all speed, the falling mast was often feared to be a danger to other masts, the structural integrity of the ship overall, and the crewmembers' lives.
