Winchelsea is a small town on the southeast coast of England. Through the middle ages, it had supported the Cinque Ports , an economic and military affiliation of port cities often on the front lines of conflict with France. The city seal, depicted below, illustrates how much Winchelsea's connection to the sea was a central part of its identity, and is an interesting maritime artifact: 

Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham and 7th Earl of Winchilsea, was First Lord Admiral of the Royal Navy from 1681-1684 and there were several ships named "Winchelsea" in his honor, from a fifth-rate frigate in the late 1600s to a destroyer active in WWII.
