Avery [Part i] Treaty of Ryswick

This 1697 agreement ended the Nine Years' War that had been fought by Louis XIV (France) against a coalition of other nations, including England, Spain and the Holy Roman Empire. In addition to formally acknowledging England's Protestantism (by recognizing King William of England and abandoning the Catholic Jacobite claim to the throne), boundaries around the globe were formalized. Several were in the Caribbean, essentially eliminating the grey areas that had allowed buccaneers to thrive in the region through the seventeenth century.
