'One That's More Torrid': The Pirates of Madagascar

[Avery i] Midshipman

Joel Baer has delved into Plymouth’s public records, and found evidence that the real Avery rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy to serve as midshipman on the third-rate battleship Rupert before moving to the merchant fleet at La Coruña . Unlike almost all the other men in positions of authority aboard a ship of the navy, the midshipman was not “exclusively a young, well-connected candidate for the officer class, but often a ‘tarpawlin of lower-deck origin,’ and an old hand responsible for work at midship… [who was among] the most choice and able mariners that were…fit for command if occasion required it.”
The real-life Avery appears to be an example of the elusive potential to rise through the ranks based on a natural ability with navigation and command; he possessed an unblemished record until he left for the private sector of the shipping industry.
