Fostering sustainability in Brazilian agrarian reform: insights from assentamentos and ecovillages

The research was conducted by three main investigators - Bruno Paschoal, Caio Werneck and Javier Guillot - and assisted by other people - Bárbara Marra, Lucas Rached, Luise Peebles, Rodrigo Levy, Robert Smit and Willem Minderhoud. The research had the supervision of Prof. Dr. Johanna Mair, from the Hertie School of Governance, in Berlin.

Bruno Paschoal is a researcher in Law and Public Policy and the Executive-Director of OndaPolitica (2015-2018). He received his LL.B at University of São Paulo in 2009, his LL.M in Law and Development at Fundação Getúlio Vargas in 2012 and a MPP at the Hertie School of Governance in 2015. Bruno has a long experience in working with empirical qualitative studies in different policy areas. Furthermore, Bruno is also a cultural entrepreneur, always looking for innovative ways to do traditional stuff.

Caio Werneck was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He holds a Bachelor in Public Administration from the Fundação João Pinheiro (2009), a degree in Design Thinking from the Hasso Plattner Institut (2014) and Master in Public Policy from the Hertie School of Governance (2015). Caio has a long experience as policy-maker in Brazil. He worked for 4 years in the state government of Minas Gerais: first as a member of the Monitoring & Evaluation Unit under the Vice-governor’s Office, then co-designing and leading Movimento Minas, a project aimed to bring citizens to participate in the policy process using innovative online and offline collaborative methodologies and tools. Caio is currently working for FAPEMIG, an agency that fund researchers from the state of Minas Gerais.

Javier Guillot holds a BA (Universidad Nacional de Colombia, 2007) and an MA in Philosophy (University of Pennsylvania, 2011) and a MPP (Hertie School of Governance, 2015). After an experience as editorial coordinator in an academic unit (School of Government, Universidad de los Andes), he worked as researcher and practitioner in a Colombian NGO (Corpovisionarios), focusing in the design and implementation of projects for positive social change. Javier is currently Advisor for Social Innovation and Innovation in Public Management, National Planning Department of Colombia.

Bárbara Marra is our in-house designer. Bachelor in Law (University of São Paulo, 2009), Bárbara decided to change her career five years ago and dedicate herself to what she really loves: designing cool stuff. Currently, Bárbara is studying fashion design and pattern making at Esmod Berlin.

Lucas Rached is Onda's cinematographer and screenwriter. He holds a Bachelor in Cinema by FAAP-SP (2008) and has over 10 years of experience in different areas of the audiovisual production. He has already Directed two short-cut movies about refugees in São Paulo and worked as Director of Photography in dozens of movies (fictions, documentaries, TV shows and advertisement). Currently, Lucas works as a screenwriter and audiovisual project development at Consulado, in São Paulo, Brazil.

Rodrigo Levy is Onda's official cinematographer, video-maker and audiovisual consultant. He is graduated in Cinema (FAAP-SP) and is currently doing his masters in New Media in UDK (Berlin's Academy of Art). Rodrigo works as Director of Photography since 2008 and has shot incredible movies like "Escape from my Eyes", premiered in the Berlin Film Festival; "Belo Monte: Announcement of a War"; "Leva" (New York Film Festival, Havana Film Festival), among others. He has also being assistant to Estevan Schilling for over 3 years, working as film editor assistant in TV series, Short Films, Documentaries, Trailers, and Advertising.

Robert Smit & Willem Minderhoud are from Jongens van de Tekeningen, our oldest and best partner. They are a Dutch Studio for Visual Thinking and Story Telling that facilitate visual thinking processes to enhance creativity and inventive thinking for professionals. They visualize abstract and complex concepts and stories in such a way that they can be explained to a specific audience in a compelling and engaging way. Although they are not officially part of Onda, Jongens are constantly engaging with us in our different projects.
