Political Climate

These two articles help exemplify the political atmosphere in which students were gaining their education. Though they in no way capture what every student's political belief or participation was at the time, these articles do help contextualize what interested members of the student body and what the Trail editors considered media that students would like to consume.

This two page spread covers the GOP Political Convocation which addresses the recent nomination of George Wallace, a radical populist candidate who surprised everyone in his nomination. The tension between the evident popularity of his ideas and the blatant racism behind them caused concern in both parties. [A&SC 19].

This small article tucked into the last page of the Trail summarizes political forum that took place at a coffee shop near campus. Originally, the speakers were supposed to be representatives of the two National Conventions, but instead students from campus were invited to come and speak to a much older and more conservative audience. The result was frustration and a lack of communication, as a younger generation tried to explain their own personal views and choices. [A&SC 18].
