Legacy Status and Scholarships
Looking forward, recent conversations about redress have focused on granting descendants of formerly interned Japanese Americans legacy status at universities where their relatives were unable to finish their degrees due to internment, and in developing a scholarship program for those same students.
The push for legacy status is especially important at private universities, such as USC, where such status is taken into consideration during admissions. While reparations and honorary degrees address the concerns of those who experienced internment, legacy status and scholarships address the impact that internment continues to have on current generations.
This is a newly emerging line of activism, and thus is ripe for future research and discourse.
