Meal Plans at CWRU

Wasted Meal Plans

A full time student attends 14-17 credit hours at CWRU (see 1/3 down page). This is about 3-5 classes of workload for each student and on average most student are full time at CWRU. Along with clubs, sports, and other types of participation on campus, the CWRU student is usually busy throughout the whole week. Many times, students may only have time to eat 2 meals per day, or normally choose to eat 2 meals per day based on personal preference. Not all students at CWRU do not always enjoy eating at the dining halls 2-3 times a day as well. The meal plan provides only 3-5 portable meal swipes only. Dining options on campus have increased in the past years and this has provided students with many other choices to dine. Students can easily get food at a location that only accepts normal currency or Case Cash. The amount of Case Cash received is adjusted when comparing it to which meal plan it is associated with. Students often find that the price they are paying for a meal at one of the variety of locations on campus will be cheaper than the price per meal swipe. These points together show that some meal swipes may go to waste by the reset of the week and how Case Cash is used quickly by some students. These wasted meal swipes accumulate and by the end of the semester, students may have wasted hundred of dollars. For example, one meal plan wasted per week at 19 meals/week (so using only 18 meals/week) for a first year student will accumulate $163.52 gone towards nothing in one semester.

In conclusion, the meal plan offered at CWRU has 2 components that cause the students unnecessary expense. Some small adjustments to the meal plan could easily save the students hundreds of dollars while still providing profit for the Bon Appetit organization and Case Western Reserve University.
