Meal Plans at CWRU

Past Dining on Campus

From the mid 2000s to the mid 2010s CWRU was undergoing much change in terms of dining service, meal plans, and on/off campus locations to eat. In Spring of 2000 the lack of locations to dine on campus was addressed by Alex Janevski apart Case's development committee. In a legislation bill to the General Assembly it is stated

Whereas: There is a lack of restaurants on the Case Western Reserve University campus particularly after normal business operating hours and, We believe the addition of one or more 24-hour restaurants would improve the quality of life for students

This is one of the first mentions for an increase in dining options recorded online. Although it primarily addresses the concern for more 24-hour dining options, it is still relevant to the lack of dining options during this time. In an article posted in 2004 about hot places to dine and hang for the undergraduate students, it is written

Next door to our campus you'll find the best pizza in Cleveland in Little Italy, a neighborhood settled by Italian immigrants. And just up the hill is the eclectic Coventry village, home to restaurants ranging from sushi to subs, burritos to buffalo wings; plus all the shopping you just can't find in a mall.

This quote is from Case's undergraduate information page in 2004. The explore Case tab in the site at the time directs students towards little Italy (located at the South East part of campus) as well as Coventry (South off of campus) for dining options and activities. Little Italy is much more fine dining that most college students can afford on the regular. Quality, authentic Italian food is served at a variety of restaurants in Little Italy and it continues to be a diverse cultural community in CWRU's campus. Coventry is another culturally diverse location in the Cleveland area with many options to dine and shop, however the large distance and lack of transportation for many of the undergraduate population makes traveling to Coventry difficult.

In 2012, uptown Euclid underwent the second stage of a massive construction project (about $21 million) aiming to provide more housing for the students apart of CWRU and CIA as well as new locations for companies to establish business. The project was carried out by MRN. Ltd. This resulted in an explosion of new dining options on campus and uptown is currently done with construction and fully populated with different cultural restaurants, recreation, and services. Some of the new dining options that acquired a location in the newly constructed buildings are

The dining options on campus have exploded in the last decade and a half and it is thanks to the efforts made by CWRU, CIA, and the affiliated companies that aimed to provide more for the students of these Universities. There are currently many more locations to dine on campus than before and this is a positive change. However, there has been an increase in the price of meal plans since then which is not so positive. Now it is time to examine the past meal plans.
