Welcome and Bio

Hello! My name is Murphy Roberts and I am currently a sophomore Political Science major at Middlebury College. I am also a member of ski team here and take a wide array of classes. I have a very busy schedule and get much less sleep than I should. Despite all this, I always seem to make room for television. I am obsessed with the very institution of it having grown up watching CNBC with my dad in the kitchen every morning while eating my breakfast. My family was an early adopter of TiVo and grew up as loyal followers of a variety of shows from Survivor and Saturday Night Live to The Office and The Colbert Report. Now, in college, my main vice is Netflix as I am compelled to watch an episode of something as I fall asleep every night (usually It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, or Parks and Recreation). I have also embraced the more critically acclaimed series on television. Despite being the youngest member of my family, I was the first one to watch shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones and later recommending them to my family members. TV has become an escape for me as I generally partake in binge watching on my own rather than as a collective family experience.

Over the course of this blog, I will be analyzing several aspects of television culture, with an emphasis on Showtime's Homeland. I have a great interest in terrorism and the narrative that surrounds it. It is a form of violence that is meant to transcend the traditions of warfare and is heavily driven by the various ways it is perceived within the cultures that it affects. I would like to use the images portrayed in Homeland to display how modern terrorism has changed the American psyche over the past few years and how it pertains to our culture and actions as a nation. I hope that you enjoy!
