The Sidewalk on Delaware Ave

The sidewalk on the right side of traffic on Delaware Ave at the University of Delaware needs to be rethought. I have had multiple people agree with me that it feels unsafe given the speed of vehicles that use this road, the size of the sidewalk, and the many construction and emergency vehicles that speed down this road. Sometimes just inches of air separate students walking to class and giant construction vehicles driving down the road, sometimes at speeds of 40 miles per hour. The University of Delaware campus and surrounding Newark areas represent a haven of walkability in an area where cars and automobility reign supreme. However, this sidewalk that connects students to the university provides an area of conflict between cars and pedestrians. It is impossible to completely separate these two modes of transportation. Yet, I implore the town of Newark and the University of Delaware to focus on sidewalk safety and building larger and wider sidewalks to protect pedestrians from these busy roadways just outside campus.
