Bikers take up Sidewalk in Newark Delaware
Keywords; Mobility, transportation, walkability
The ideas of mobility justice are about fair and equitable transportation, infrastructure and resources. In terms of biking, mobility justice aims for all individuals to have safe accessible options for cycling.
This image is an illustrative example of the challenges faced on E Main Street in Newark De. Here, a group of cyclists can be seen using the sidewalk for biking. This is because there is an absence of bike lanes on this two-lane, one-way road that consists of parallel parking on both sides of the street.
This forces cyclists onto the sidewalk for their own safety but takes away from the safety of those utilizing the sidewalk for walkability. This lack of bike lanes impacts not only cyclists but pedestrians as well.
This emphasizes our need for safe spaces for cyclists to keep all people safe. By providing safe bike lanes for cyclists, especially where traffic congestion is common, cyclists, pedestrians and public transit users have an increase in overall mobility.
