Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

The Bike Bus is an organization that started in Portland, Oregon by the physical education teacher of a local elementary school, Coach Balto. He describes it as a “walking school bus.” Coach Balto leads the bike bus and has parent and teacher volunteers that help to keep the children safe. They ride throughout the neighborhood and pick up children along the way that want to ride their bike to school. It is a way for children to gain independence and start to learn bike safety, as well as encouraging exercise. It also cuts down on buses and is a cleaner form of travel benefiting the environment. Children are also to walk along with the bike bus making it more accessible. Coach Balto is also passionate about encouraging local community leaders to create safer biking infrastructure. He has found success in posting videos about this on Tiktok encouraging bike buses to start in other communities around the country as well.
