Micro-Landscapes of the Anthropocene

Natureculture

Natureculture suggests that a series of dualisms that informed by Western culture, perpetuate an anthropocentric dominance over nature. A thread can be traced to thinkers like Francis Bacon. Rationalism and the Humanist ideology stressed human dominance over nature with little consideration for environmental sustainability.

Natureculture removes the dichotomy which presents the natural world as a ‘background’ in which a ‘foreground’ can dominate. Recognising this dichotomy means we can redefine the hierarchical structure and engage in a relation based on mutuality with the ‘other-than-human’, emphasising connections, networks, interfaces, relationality, interdependence, border-crossing, co-existence and co-becoming. The teleology that determines the triumph of nature ought to be celebrated can in this case be revised, and this mutuality can position us in a more egalitarian relation with nature.
