Micro-Landscapes of the Anthropocene

HEAVE

How foolish we are for once believing that Atlas had held up the Earth and sky on his shoulders. The very origin of his punishment may even have stemmed from Zeus observing an ant carrying away a morsel of his ambrosia. The value of insects hides in the back of our minds as they continually heave the essence of life on their tiny backs. If cells are the building blocks of life, then the cells that make up insects support it. They play a large role in the conjuring of our food sources from pollination to ensuring soil fertility. We sometimes eat them as novelties and oftentimes eat the food they’ve produced for themselves (honey). Their true beauty will always be overshadowed by their undesirable aesthetics. One would be foolish to deny the similarities between insects and humans. Our communities mimic their hives. Our subway tunnels mimic ant tunnels. Our roads mimic spider webs. Maybe we mimic them because we’re subconsciously jealous of their ability to languish in any condition. The buzz of an insect reminds us that they are an irritation in our lives, but one must wonder if perhaps we’re an irritation in theirs. Despite this, insects constantly heave a world that is constantly being pushed down on them.
