  The arrival of the conquistadors in Latin America no doubt shaped the region's future. In the year 1529, Hernan Cortes arrived on the Mexican coast in Tabasco, forming allies with neighboring tribes under Aztec control. From there, he entered Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, welcomed by the Emperor Montezuma, who mistook him for Quetzalcoatl, the serpent god who was prophesied to return that year. Welcomed as an honored guest, he took the city hostage. Although he was driven away once, he ultimately took control of Tenochtitlan by 1521, marking the end of the Aztec Empire (Hernán Cortés).
  
  La llegada de los conquistadores a América Latina sin duda dio forma al futuro de la región. En el año 1529, Hernán Cortés llegó a la costa mexicana en Tabasco, formando aliados con las tribus vecinas que estaban bajo el control azteca. Desde allí, ingresó a Tenochtitlán, la capital azteca, acogido por el emperador Moctezuma, quien lo confundió con Quetzalcóatl, el dios serpiente cuya llegada fue profetizada sería ese año. Acogido como un invitado de honor, tomó la ciudad de rehén. Aunque fue expulsado una vez, finalmente tomó el control de Tenochtitlán en 1521, marcando el final del imperio azteca (Hernán Cortés). 
  
  

  Hernan Cortés continues to remain a controversial figure in Mexican history. Cortes enslaved a large portion of the native population he came into contact with and even those who he did enslave faced consequences, succumbing to new diseases such as smallpox. By claiming Mexico City, formerly Tenochtitlan, for Spain, he opened the door for Spain and Portugal farther south in the continent (Szalay, Jessie). This new colonial period would usher in the beginning of the hacienda system, which kept natives working the land for Spanish landowners in abhorrent conditions.  
  
  Hernán Cortés sigue siendo una figura controvertida en la historia de México. Cortés esclavizó a una gran parte de la población indígena con la que entró en contacto e incluso los que no esclavizó enfrentaron consecuencias, sucumbiendo a nuevas enfermedades como la viruela. Reclamando la Ciudad de México, anteriormente conocida como, Tenochtitlán, para España, abrió la puerta a España y Portugal más al sur del continente (Szalay, Jessie). Este nuevo período colonial marcaría el comienzo del sistema de hacienda, que mantuvo a los indígenas  trabajando la tierra para los terratenientes españoles en condiciones abominables.
  
  

  La Malinche, a lesser known figure in the Spanish-Aztec war and an Aztec exile, was the interpreter for Cortes who helped facilitate the communication between the Spanish and the neighboring tribes to ultimately conquer the Aztecs. In some aspects, she is said to embody treachery or betrayal, as some consider she turned her back on her own people. In other aspects,  she is seen as the mother of the Mexican people, as she formed some of the first mestizos by having children with Cortes ("Who Was La Malinche? | JSTOR Daily")

  La Malinche, una figura menos conocida en la guerra hispano-azteca y una exiliada azteca, fue la intérprete de Cortés que ayudó a facilitar la comunicación entre los españoles y las tribus vecinas para finalmente conquistar a los aztecas. En algunos aspectos, se dice que ella encarna la traición o el engaño, ya que algunos consideran que ella le dio la espalda a su propia gente. En otros aspectos, la Malinche es vista como la madre del pueblo mexicano, ya que formó algunos de los primeros mestizos al tener hijos con Cortés ("Quien Era La Malinche? | JSTOR Daily"). 

  To the Aztec and Spanish, whose cultures would meld to partially create a semblance of what we know now as the Mexican culture, this era of colonialism would bring upon fear, uncertainty and human atrocities which would create new monsters for the people of Mexico, not only the obvious ones such as Cortes and Malinche, but also slavery and subjugation. 
  
  Para los aztecas y los españoles, cuyas culturas se fusionaron para crear una raza mixta a la que ahora conocemos como la cultura mexicana, La nueva era del colonialismo traería miedo, incertidumbre y atrocidades humanas que crearían nuevos monstruos para el pueblo de México, no solo los obvios como Cortés y Malinche, sino también el esclavitud y la subyugación.
