Memio: Externalizing Memory for Early-Onset Alzheimer's and Dementia Patients

THE PRODUCT

By using the method of Design Fiction, "Memio" explores the possibility of externalizing the memory of early-onset Alzheimer's and Dementia patients through wearable technology.

Abstract

According to the American Alzheimer’s Association, 5.8 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and by 2050 that number is projected to rise to 14 million.

This project uses the technique of design fiction in order to posit a memory aide: Memio, a device meant to combat the effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia through the externalization of memory. Memio’s design combines the voice recognition of devices such as Alexa or Google Home with the facial recognition and on-screen projection capabilities of augmented reality software.

Conceptually, the device would record the conversations and events in the daily life of early-onset Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and output that information at the appropriate time. In this way, patients would rely on the device for help with daily tasks as an alternative to assisted living.

This project not only focuses on Memio’s ability to help patients regain the human connection they lost to the disease but also highlights current technical limitations. Memio seeks to store and retrieve recent memories, not long-term memories that early Alzheimer’s and dementia patients often retain. By showing a humane use of technological innovation, Memio aims to inspire hope rather than fear.

Concept and Design

The Memio device hardware and construction are inspired by current wearable tech models such as the Google Glass or Apple Watch. Designed with the patient’s comfort in mind, the Memio device is a lightweight and secure lens attachment that operates much like Google Glass or any smart-glass device. The theory behind the piece is that a display layer is projected on the glass through a prism that resides in the center console. The center piece doubles as a protective cover for the spring clip, which allows for the Memio device to attach to any regular set of prescription glasses. The center console of the device features a camera and mini-mic to process the intake of data that the Memio can use to improve its library of information.

The Memio device brings wearable tech into the world of cognitive and occupational therapy, which is why the goal of the design is to provide assistance to its patience with minimal impact on daily routine and mobility. The casings on the hardware of the device are a lightweight plastic, and the exterior glass features thin wire frames that allow for the Memio to attach to any set of lenses with comfort and ease.

Overall, the "Memio" device is a ready companion for any patient, and one that aims to provide assistance while remaining a sleek and lightweight piece of innovative tech.
