JUMP

John Mighton, author, playwright and mathematician, found JUMP (Junior Undiscovered Math Prodigies), a national non-profit organization, after having discovered through tutoring and failing a number of university-level math tests, that math instruction was seriously flawed and that educators’ claim that math is reserved for the select few in society who possess an innate ability to understand and digest it is a myth. His book, The Myth of Ability (2003), charts the beginnings of the Jump program (Part 1), in Mighton’s Toronto apartment, where 8 tutors took 15 elementary students from working families in his neighbourhood through his Jump method. Mighton dissects the Failure of Failure (Chapter 4) of the traditional classroom setup and its unsuitability for teaching mathematics. Part 2 deals specifically with the Jump Method (approaches to elementary mathematics) in six chapters taken from The Jump Teaching Manual. Numerous Jump Math programs exist for the multi-level math tutoring. The programs are sold to school boards, schools and teachers. Many schools across the country, and in the U.S., have adopted The Jump Method helping over 140,000 children. In 2015, “earned income from program sales and advance royalties is projected (unaudited) to be $3.2 million, up from $1.8 million in 2014.” The income earned however is reinvested into JUMP to further its mission. “JUMP is recognized as a leading social enterprise and its founder as an acclaimed social entrepreneur.” Equally remarkable is John Mighton’s personal journey, from being a successful playwright who found it difficult to make ends meet to back-to-school graduate student who got a PhD, rediscovered himself through tutoring countless elementary students, and in the process helped children rediscover themselves and their potential – through math.
