Archival Silences

Something is Always Left Out

Archival silences occur when materials documenting the past are not collected, intentionally or unintentionally. We can only learn, piece together, and create a story about the past from what was printed, written down, photographed, recorded, and then saved by individuals or places like the Mazer. This is why seeking out a variety of perspectives is so important to an archive.

The Mazer believes the everyday should be preserved, and encourages people to save and donate their photos, home videos, journals, recipes, letters, life’s work, and any other ways you may have documented your memories, especially if you don’t see yourself or your experience in these exhibits. Record yourself telling the story, write it down, find those photographs. If you have any materials or stories relating to what was shown in this exhibit please email the Mazer at contact@mazerlesbianarchives.org, we'd love to hear about it.
