In 1992 Watt was elected to the US House of Representatives and became one of only two African Americans elected to Congress from North Carolina in the twentieth century. This button is an example of a "coattail." The "coattail effect" presumes that the popularity of a political party leader will attract votes for other candidates of the same party. In this case, Watt was elected, Gore was not.
