Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

This scene follows the story of Rosa, the sister, as she has just escaped an INS raid at the garment job she just began. Rosa relies on Nacha, played by prolific Mexican American film actress Lupe Ontiveros, to show her around after she leads Rosa away from the raid. Presumably the garment job was downtown as the two travel to South Broadway for lunch. Rosa is surprised by the dominance of Latino population on the street. Others might be equally surprised by the proximity and connections the garment industry has to Historic Theater District on Broadway that would lead to Rosa and Nacha to lunch there.

From the Palace marquee and storefront windows we can identify this Downtown Los Angeles location as South Broadway. Surprised by the ethnicity of the population on the street, Rosa comments that the street looks just like a street in Mexico.plain2015-05-30T23:16:25-07:00Veronica Paredesf39d262eb7e9d13906fe972f3e5494dbae1896bc
