Hosting a movie night:
This can be done in a private venue, or with the co-operation of a local movie theatre.Suggestions:
Crafts:
- Attendees can make three buttons, then trade two of them with others. This will serve as an icebreaker activity and provide them with a tangible reminder of International Peace Day.
- Making origami cranes. Japanese legend states that if someone folds 1,000 paper cranes, they will be granted a wish. The book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, written by Canadian-American author Eleanor Coerr, has popularised this legend in North America, and folding paper cranes to wish for world peace is a frequent celebration activity, both for Peace Day in Japan (6 August) and International Peace Day (21 September).
Panel Presentation:
- After inviting and confirming panelists, we would provide them with a list of questions to address. This would happen before the event so they would have time to prepare, and would be a useful approach because then they would (hopefully) present a few different viewpoints.
