Action Plan
This e-portfolio serves as my Master of Management in Library and Information Science (MMLIS) LIM 598 Capstone Project, in which I will demonstrate my learnings and relevant applications during my two years in the program and relate my knowledge to the American Library Association (ALA) core competencies and project management skills curated by University of Southern California’s (USC) Marshall School of Business (Winn, 2023). The next sections on this page will share my general approaches, a schedule overview of my action plan, and a SMART goal for developing and completing my e-portfolio.
General Approach
To demonstrate my growth and experiences in the MMLIS program through my e-portfolio, I will gain technical skills in navigating and utilizing the digital platform, OER Scalar, that will host my portfolio of writings and artifacts I produced in the program that describes relevant LIS learning and skills. The writing assignments and artifacts will demonstrate MMLIS class, internship, current work knowledge, and skills that correlate with ALA core competencies and project management skills. The writing assignments are:- Action Plan
- Artifact Matrix
- Program Goals Essays
- Statement of Professional Philosophy (SOPP)
- Job Search
- Diversity Statement
- Final E-Portfolio Completion
- Conclusion/Reflective Essay
After completing this achievable Action Plan, I intend to frequently refer to it to ensure I’m on track with all e-portfolio assignments.
I will consult with the instructor on my progress during these 15 weeks of completing this Capstone Project to ensure that I will gather all pertinent artifacts, relate them with relevant ALA-core program goals, and do so reflectively.
Lastly, there are challenges for me to consider in completing my portfolio. One is the overwhelming feeling of choosing which resources I’ve created during this program as my artifacts to showcase in the e-portfolio. I am concerned that it may affect my completion of the weekly assignments outlined in the schedule (next section) at a slower pace. The second is balancing schoolwork, my current professional work, and personal time during these 15 weeks. I am responsible for completing two classes this semester, working full-time, and looking after my spouse and parents. However, I will establish boundaries with my loved ones during this last semester to complete this e-portfolio that reflects my LIS learning and skills.

This timeline follows the academic program’s weekly schedule. The weekly assignments in the bold text align with the instructor’s mandatory live sessions and deadlines for writing submission and Scalar uploads. The described actions not in bold are achievable tasks I set for myself and associated with my writing assignment deadlines. The work hours column indicates how much time I will spend on each portfolio task. From this action plan, I can see that weeks 4-8 will be the most intensive. Therefore, I will mentally prepare for those assignments in two ways: (1) I will focus on one assignment at a time to stay on target, and (2) I will make rational decisions to not add new to-dos to my plate during those specific weeks. If I fall behind on assignments, I must immediately communicate with the Capstone Instructor to request a reasonable extension and re-evaluate my action plan schedule.
SMART Goal [Summary]
Inspired by George T. Doran’s “There’s a S.M.A.R.T. way to write management goals and objectives”, I’ve developed a Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely goal to follow my action plan:During academic weeks 1-15, I will follow the timeline I outlined to complete my capstone requirements (e-portfolio), reflectively choose artifacts illustrating my LIS skills and knowledge that correspond with ALA core competencies, and seek support from the Capstone Instructor if there are challenges in completing each weekly task before each deadline.
