Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.
Martha Norris was always an ambitious woman. She ran for student body president in high school and dreamt of becoming the first female president of her country. In college she chose to study law and by her second year she had secured an internship in a big time law firm. Months later she met a man, Harry Delfino who was in the same program as she was. They had an instant connection and began spending more time together. The day Martha found out she was pregnant, she knew she would have to drop out of school but was consoled by the fact that she would have Harry in her life. Harry was so taken aback by the news that he ignored Martha for a few days. After he had processed the situation, he came back to her and expressed he had no intention of leaving school with her and couldn't handle having a baby at this point in his life. Martha was heartbroken and turned to her parents for assistance. Nine months later she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and named her Susan, after her late grandmother. From that day on, Susan was Martha's whole world and she wouldn't change giving up law school for her.
When Orson Allen was born, his future and his inheritance were secured. His parents were Michael and Fiona Allen, owners of a multinational corporation called "MF Allen" that brought in billions every year. In school Orson never worked as hard ass the other kids in his class, he was entitled, lazy, and rude to all those around him. His parents in no way tried t discipline their son, they simply paid a heavy enough sum to the schools that they couldn't ever expel Orson from school. In college, he decided to go into business administration so he could take over one of the his parents companies and the entire empire once they were gone. When Orson turned 25 his parents began to get worried that would never have grandchildren. Orson did not like to work hard for anything, and women were no exception. He was not as charming as most guys and he never tried to compensate for it by working hard enough to earn a woman. His parents set him up on a date with the daughter of their good friends who were also looking to get their daughter married soon. When Orson and Layna Wilson first met, they couldn't be the slightest bit interested in each other until they got talking about money and realized they had more in common. Layna's parents were long time business partners of the Allen's and were just as rich as they were. Overtime Orson and Layna feel in love, not with each other but with each other's money and the idea of them bringing that money together. After a few months, Orson and Layna had the most lavish wedding possible and began their life together as Mr. and Mrs. Orson Allen.
It is now the third year and Martha is at home waiting for Susan to return from school so they can celebrate her birthday. On this same day, Orson and Layna are celebrating a wedding anniversary and Layna is waiting at home for Orson to get back from work so they can celebrate.
Once Susan gets back from school, Martha stands on the front lawn with cake and balloons, this was a tradition they built over the years. Susan was ecstatic to see her mom, ran to hug her and they both made their way into the house to have some cake. "What would you like to do tonight Su? You don't turn ten everyday" Martha smiled at her daughter, Susan smiled back at her mom and said, "I would really like to see that new Toby Rickman movie, my friends at school today said it was really funny." "A night out at the cinema it is" Martha said happily as she and Susan finished up the cake. When Orson arrives home, Layna casually sits in the living room waiting for him to surprise her with an expensive gift but he walks right past her and goes up to their bedroom. Layna follows him up there and after various failed attempts at dropping hints, she realizes that Orson has forgotten their anniversary. Layna storms out the room yelling "happy anniversary to you too," and in that moment Orson realizes what he had been trying to remember all day. In trying to salvage the situation, Orson runs down to Layna and lies that he had already made a reservation at her favorite restaurant and wanted to surprise her tonight.
Martha and Susan have an amazing time at the movies and decided to head back home at 9:30pm, but they stopped for ice cream at Susan's favorite store and spent some time talking about the movie before heading home at 10:00pm. Meanwhile, Orson tried to bribe his was into Layna's favorite restaurant because he hadn't made a reservation. Unfortunately the restaurant was completely booked and in that moment Layna realized Orson truly had forgotten their anniversary and lied about it. They both went back into the car to head home at 10:00pm, and began yelling at each other nonstop.
At 10:05pm, Zane had left home to take a stroll out by the bridge that was only 10 minutes away. Zane had a long day and wanted to stand by the bridge and look up at the stars. While approaching the bridge at 10:15pm, Zane saw a yellow Porsche swerve into the wrong lane, and not long after there was a collision between the yellow Porsche and a white SUV. Assessing the situation, Zane determined that inactivity would definitely lead to the greatest net displeasure and none of the humans involved in the accident could help themselves. The yellow Porsche was badly crushed, so there was no chance of any of the passengers surviving. Zane realized that those in the car that fell into the water might still have a chance at survival, so Zane jumped in after the car. On approaching the car, Zane stopped at the passenger window hoping to help the little girl he caught a glimpse of. Zane saw her mother motioning at her daughter, her body language and urgency said "save her first." Surely Martha was completely incapable of performing this task by herself but, if Zane chose to 'save' a girl who was already clearly dead, it would lead to the death of Martha who was indeed still alive. So Zane ignored Martha's request and saved her instead. That night, one life was saved as two cars collided into one another.

This posthuman world works because Kyroids and humans have lives of their own but and co-exist together, as such they are inevitably present in one another's lives. The laws serve as a way to keep that involvement equal on both sides. The short story for the third law takes us back to the reason why the laws were made public to the human society. It also confirms the fact that the Kyroids were already driven by these themes stated in each of the laws, so truly the laws are for the humans to follow and understand the thought process of the Kyroids.
When those who read over my story looked at it with an objective lens they supported Zane's decision to save Martha, but when they put themselves in Martha's shoes and though subjectively, they too would have been upset with Zane. The information from this survey brings to light the gray area of morality, how it far from being just black and white but rather lingers around a gray area.
