Posthumanism Through the Lense of Cinema

I, Robot (2004) Scene analysis

The scene is found at the beginning of the film between 10:19 and 11:41. As it is in the beginning, it establishes the relationship humans will have with technology. The scene begins with a doctor talking about an event in which he needs the help of this particular policeman. During the conversation, the doctor answers coldly and somewhat cryptic way. We finally understand only when the camera moves that the doctor is only a hologram and not a real person. I think that this play with perspective indicates that in the film, the line between human and technological is non-existent and that everything is a question of perspective.

Finally, when the hologram disappears, we can see that Del is facing a message from the doctor as if he had planned his death. We can see on the floor the dead doctor surrounded by small pieces of glass, showing that he probably committed suicide. Then the camera, after showing us the body moves up to reveal a giant statue of a robot towering over everyone. The robot statue is enormous and is almost as big as the building it is in. It is interesting to see that instead of seeing a statue of an important person, it is a robot that is like leaning forward and looking down, giving it an authoritative look. It is understood that technology is seen as a saviour with the rays of light surrounding the head of the robot, which provides it with a look of purity. However, because of the music and the camera's angle, I find the robot rather worrying and threatening. He is put in a position of power as if he sees everything that the humans under him do, and maybe it is a foreshadowing that the robot will try to take over the humans later in the movie.
