Fractals in Nature

Before we discuss Leibniz work on theology and infinity, we should first look at his inspiration -- Fractals in nature.

Fractals occur very often in nature, in everything from dried up river beds  to lightning
to cauliflower. Leibniz recognized the concept of self-similarity and although he did not ever use the term fractal, he was thinking of the same irregular geometrical objects. However, his interest in self-similarity was not purely mathematical. Rather, he saw connections to his theological work. But before we get to that, I better answer the question, What is a Fractal?
