• 1 2018-01-04T09:09:17-08:00 Narrative 1 Using Student "How to" Video Tutorial plain 2018-01-04T09:09:17-08:00 At Perez Career and Transition Center (CTC), students with special needs take vocational courses such as Culinary Arts, Auto Detailing, Marketing and Sales, and Product Design to prepare for life and career after graduation.  Students learn these vocational skills and crafts during class hours; however beyond this time, there is little opportunity for students to revisit and reflect on their daily learning.  
  
  In our quest to leverage technology to increase student learning, we noticed teachers accessing content from YouTube for “How to” video tutorials specific to the vocational skills they are teaching.  We decided to utilize the Tech Tub iPads each classroom recently received and to explore creating student facilitated “How to” video tutorials using iMovie, with the idea of posting them as assignments in Schoology.
  
  This ongoing project has the potential to allow for extended learning beyond classroom hours, as students will have 24/7 access to the video assignments posted in Schoology.  In addition, the process of engaging Perez students in writing storyboards and creating iMovies to teach their peers specific vocational skills empowers them as learners and constructors of knowledge.  We hope to shift the teaching and learning paradigm from students as the receivers of knowledge to students as facilitators of knowledge.

   

  Digital Tools Leveraged in this Lesson

  Schoology, a Learning Management System (LMS), was leveraged in this lesson to provide the opportunity for students to extend their learning beyond school hours.  Students will have 24/7 access to the “How to” video tutorials posted in Schoology to review and reflect on the vocational skills they learned in class.

  iMovie, an Apple video editing platform, was leveraged in this lesson to create “How to” video tutorials showcasing the specific skills and crafts students are learning in their vocational courses.  Students started the process with brainstorming ideas and creating storyboards before moving into recording video clips on the iPad cameras.  They created their final products using the editing features of iMovie.
