Lesson Sequence

1. Mr. Ayala uses Schoology to communicate a coding assignment which specifies a task students must complete (e.g., write code to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit).

    
2. Students write code in class and at home, seeking help from Mr. Ayala either in person or via the messaging function of Schoology.

    
3. Students run their finished code through the embedded code compiler (compilejava.net) before submitting the assignment.

   • If the code compiler returns errors in the code, students then make corrections and repeat the process.

   • If students cannot fix the errors on their own, or come to limits to their current abilities, they take screenshots of their code and error reports and seek assistance from Mr. Ayala in person or through Schoology messaging.

      
4. Students copy their compiled, functional code and paste it into a Schoology submission for the assignment.

    
5. Mr. Ayala analyzes issues that arose with all of his students to determine if there is a need to reteach or highlight areas where frequent errors occurred.

How does this work empower learners? 

Empowered Learner (ISTE 1) - This lesson embodies the empowered learner standard because it is an example of leveraging a digital resource to provide immediate, consistent feedback to students. Students can then use that feedback to engage in an iterative process that allows them to engage in repeated practice and deeper learning according to their needs.
Enact a continuum for achieving learner agency for students and school leaders (TFR 1) - This lesson leverages digital resources to give students the ability to guide their own learning according to their needs. They receive instant feedback and multiple opportunities to practice those concepts and principles they have not yet mastered.
