A conversation with Ms. Solaraz:
“My students loved using Padlet. They were instantly engaged! I look forward to exploring other ways that I can integrate this collaborative tool in my lessons.”
Why is it important to understand good paraphrasing practices?“Students want to just copy another author’s words and use it as their own. This practice can get students into trouble! They need practice in order to effectively put what the author says into their own words.”
Why is citing the author important?“This provides a legal way to use information while giving the writer credit. Go ahead and copy exactly what they say… just do it with quotes and author credit!”
When I use this lesson next time:“I would use fewer questions. Asking six questions became a bit much to manage.”
A conversation with the students:
Sarah M.:
“It was fun to see what my classmates said and how they answered the questions that Ms. Solarz posted. I want to do it again!”
Josh W.:“Ms. Solarz is alway finding new ways to review writing concepts. This was fun and fast! I could look at my classmates answers and that offered me some ideas that I had not considered.”
Miranda S.:“I would like to use Padlet to create a full presentation! I can also use it in my other classes! Who needs PowerPoint?”

Paraphrasing Practice
Student teams/partners read a quote. They place strips with student paraphrasing samples on them in order from best to worst. Labeled A-E (Make these ahead of time and place in envelopes for reuse.) Sample fromParaphrasing Practice Answer Keys
Teacher creates a set of answer keys and reviews the correct order with the teams. Students love it when they get the order right!Other Resources:

REFLECTION- Challenges/Considerations
“One of the major challenges with this lesson came with my younger students. Because my course is a grade 6-8 Science Elective class, my 6th graders had a steeper learning curve in learning how to use their Google Drive as well as Google Slides--as they didn't have much experience with Google search engine either. I highly recommend using the Google tutorials that are available through the Google Drive.”
This is an example of the Augmentation level in SAMR because the Human Impact presentation through the use of Google, Google Drive, and Google Slides creates a functional improvement over a written report. The students were given the type of sphere they chose to study but exercised choice in terms of the ecological problem they wanted to speak to.- Create an writing template for students to use when creating their arguments.
- Create an 8th step where students cite sources used in their presentations including images.
- Create a rubric that students can use when creating and assessing their digital presentations.
