The Lanterman CPP Campus South History Project
Authors’ note: This student-constructed project includes terminology about mental health and disabilities the medical profession used from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. The authors have chosen to follow the example set by the California Office of Historic Preservation, which noted that not all of the terms that were historically used as medical classifications can be directly translated into current terms used by the American Medical Association. Terms currently viewed with a negative connotation are bracketed in quotations to indicate recognition thereof. These terms may include “feeble minded,” “mental defectives,” “mentally retarded,” “idiot,” “imbecile,” “moron,” and “inmates.”
